Star NFL Player Injured in ATV Accident, Possible Out for Season

in ATV

A star NFL player was injured and is possibly out for the season after suffering injuries in what he is describing as a “freak accident” while he was on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) excursion while on an off-week vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. According to an article regarding the accident from ESPN.com, New York Giants star safety, team captain and defensive play caller Xavier McKinney may be out for the rest of the season due to injuries he suffered from the sightseeing tour he was on. The accident occurred when the vehicle he was in was tipped over. He was treated at a hospital in Mexico and then had surgery performed on the hand when he returned to the U.S. following his trip. Although he advised he will be out at least four games, neither McKinney nor the team would state for certain that he would definitely return this year. His hand and several fingers that were operated on are in a hard plastic cast and he will be in a sling for an indeterminate amount of time. The incident could even end up costing McKinney his paychecks for the games he has to miss given that riding in an ATV during the season is expressly prohibited by his contract with the Giants.

If an NFL player like Xavier McKinney could be injured in an accident involving an ATV while on a simple sightseeing trip, imagine what harm could befall a child or someone not taking the proper precautions while riding on one of these vehicles. ATV’s can be extremely fun, but they are also extremely dangerous. Accidents are common, particularly when someone is trying to horse around, or driving an ATV in a negligent manner.

ATV’s and the Dangers They Can Pose

Riding in or driving an all-terrain vehicle can be extremely dangerous, even if done with great care. If done safely and properly, driving or riding as a passenger in an ATV can be fun. Unfortunately, many people get behind the wheel of an ATV and use that as an excuse to engage in reckless behavior by driving at breakneck speeds or taking sharp turns without braking. This can lead to issues for other drivers in the vicinity or even passengers in the reckless driver’s ATV, who can be thrown from the vehicle and suffer serious injuries or even death because of one person taking things too far. The dangers associated with ATV’s is increased because many teenagers and younger children who do not possess a driver’s license may drive them.

The Tragic Consequences of ATV Accidents

All-terrain vehicles are built to be driven on rugged terrain-thus their name. However, because the courses and roads upon which they are driven are often so rugged and because they are often driven at high speeds and in an aggressive manner, injuries suffered in the course of riding an ATV can be serious. Broken bones that require hospitalizations or even surgeries are not uncommon occurrences for those who regularly use ATV’s or even those using them in a more controlled setting like Xavier McKinney during his sightseeing tour in Mexico. His participation in what should have been a simple and fun sightseeing tour resulted in him losing the entire football season.
