Traffic Fatalities: Three Florida Cities Rank in Top Five Nationwide

A recent study performed by Consumer Affairs highlights the dangers of driving in the Sunshine State. The study performed looked at cities with the most traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents in the country. As reported by Fox 35 Orlando, three Florida cities were in the top five. Daytona Beach had the most fatal car accidents in Florida per 100,000 residents and ranked second nationwide. The study conducted by Consumer Affairs used data compiled from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System for 2022. The only city with more fatalities than Daytona Beach was Memphis, Tennessee, with more than 33 fatal crashes per 100,000 people. There were also two other Florida cities in the top five: Ocala at #3 and Fort Lauderdale at #5. Despite having three cities in the top ten, Florida ranked #15 among the 50 states in terms of fatal crashes per 100,000 people.

Florida: Consistently Dangerous for Motorists

Although Florida’s #15 statewide rating for traffic fatalities is surprisingly low for a state that consistently ranks among the most dangerous for motorists, having three of the five most dangerous cities is alarming. The state consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous in the country for motorists. The list includes Florida cities spread out geographically across the state. Daytona is on the Atlantic side and Ocala is in north central Florida. Fort Lauderdale is in the giant South Florida metro area stretching across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. In short, it is not just the tri-county area where driving in the Sunshine State is dangerous. Some smaller Florida cities are among the most dangerous places in the country for motorists.
