Golf Cart Accident in Indian River County

A recent golf cart accident in Indian River County left a 16-year-old hospitalized. Two boys operating a golf cart on a county roadway collided with a BMW SUV on a recent weekday afternoon. According to a report from WPTV, the incident took place on 27th Avenue in Vero Beach. Officials expressly prohibit golf carts on 27th Avenue. The speed limit on the road is 50 MPH, one reason for the ban on golf carts. A sixteen-year-old boy in the golf cart sustained injuries. Emergency responders flew him to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce for treatment. Fire Rescue treated the two occupants of the SUV at the scene. The accident left both occupants uninjured. Photographs of the scene showed a golf cart flipped over and resting upside down on the road. This incident reminds us to be careful and obey the law when operating golf carts in Florida. Some roads are simply not safe for golf carts. Using golf carts on unsafe roadways risks exactly what occurred in this instance.

Florida Law For Golf Cart Drivers

Under Florida law, drivers may operate golf carts on roadways designated for them with a posted speed limit of 30 mph or less. Golf carts may also cross a portion of a county road that intersects a roadway approved for golf carts or that intersects a golf course or mobile home park. The operation of golf carts on roads must also comply with any more restrictive ordinances enacted by city or local governments.

In this incident in Vero Beach, 27th Avenue is specifically designated as a road where golf carts are not permitted. Therefore, the two boys driving the golf cart involved in this accident were in the wrong. They should not have been operating a motor vehicle on a road that does not permit such vehicles to drive. However, this does not mean the driver of the BMW SUV may not also bear some fault for the accident.
