Pedestrian and Bicycle Accidents: Prevention Tips and Legal Support

The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) recently released data for 2024 pedestrian and bicycle accidents, and it doesn’t bode well for locals. Specifically, Palm Beach County ranks 5th (top 40%) in the State of Florida. The PBSO-referenced study looked at traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists in counties with populations of over 300,000. Notably, the report states pedestrians and bicyclists were involved in 1,542 crashes, resulting in 144 serious injuries and 51 fatalities from January 1, 2024 to November 19, 2024. In 2025, Palm Beach has already recorded two pedestrian fatalities, occurring days apart in Boynton Beach and in Lake Worth. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for community-wide efforts to improve road safety.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Accidents Prevention

In an effort to protect the pedestrians and bicyclists of Palm Beach County, PBSO has been conducting High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) since August 2024. The focus of the HVE program is to increase public awareness and observance of the traffic laws that protect pedestrians and bicyclists. This includes increased patrols at specific intersections and education campaigns encouraging safe behaviors. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers are all responsible for ensuring everyone is safe on the road.

Pedestrians can reduce their risk by using crosswalks and obeying signals and wearing brightly colored clothing to increase their visibility. Bicyclists should obey all traffic laws and ride in the direction of traffic. In darker conditions, especially at night, bicyclists should use lights to improve their visibility. Similarly, drivers must obey all speed limits and traffic laws, and never drive impaired. Furthermore, drivers must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, with particular vigilance in school zones and residential areas. Everyone on the road should avoid distractions like phones while in motion.
